C.L.E. Corojo Robusto

Much has changed in the world of cigars, but the myth of the Caribbean island that was once considered the flower of the Antilles remains in place. Many a passionado-soul suffers either because of the trade embargo that still exists—the flip side of supply and demand—or simply the unaffordability of many a “beauty” from Cuba. Alternatives are gladly offered under the designation “genuine Cuban taste.” Many claim their creations are close to the original, but there is one family, who found a new home in Honduras, that manages to revive this characteristic taste. And with that introduction, welcome to our shared smoking lounge!

Today we dedicate ourselves to a very special cigar. We will enjoy a CLE Corojo Robusto. As many passionados know, Corojo is the tobacco that left its native Cuba along with many gifted blenders, and is now cultivated in many other countries. The Eiroa family has specialized in perfecting the cultivation of this tobacco. It is therefore no surprise that the cigar we are smoking today bears the initials of a man who likes to be called the “King of Corojo” – Christian Luis Eiroa.

So reach for your favorite cutting tool and a source of ignition. Join me for the next hour on a journey of – I can reveal this much – happily dancing taste buds.

I never cease to be amazed at the ease with which this cigar takes the flame. It almost seems as if it has been waiting in its box for this moment all these years.

Pay attention, starting with the very first puff. Something seems strangely familiar to you. But at this point, you can’t quite put your finger on it. The smoke is incredibly dense, the draw resistance is mostly perfect, now and then even a touch too light. The next puff brings a bit more of the old familiar something that we are still trying to sense in the smoke. After the first few puffs, the Corojo, for which Christian Eiroa is famous, begins to gradually unfold, and now some flavors flow over the tip of our tongue to tickle our palate. There are cedar notes with slight hints of citrus wrapped in some nuttiness, and each finish carries within it the soul of the Cuban homeland. Draw by draw it becomes clearer what this cigar reminds us of. It is the island where the Eiroa family’s roots also lie. The cigar starts slightly Cuban, and this feeling increases significantly the longer you enjoy it. You will also notice this. By the middle of the first third, you can feel it. The smoke is creamy and fat, it makes your mouth water as the wood notes stimulate salivation. This is exactly the moment to put the cigar aside after a retronasal “sip” of the smoke. Also, drink a sip. I opted for carbonated mineral water. Sometimes it takes nothing more than a little water and a little tingle on the tongue.

It’s amazing how long the flavor lingers on the tongue and how great that finish is.

Go ahead and let the cigar rest for a few minutes, it will forgive you, and it will even reward you. Because when you pick it up again, the next puffs will exude an incredible aroma. Towards the end of the first third, a few earthy undertones barely register, and the scent of freshly brewed espresso wanders through the nose and tickles the palate. The smoke remains silky smooth and dense. Citrus notes are a constant companion and round out the cedar flavors.

Take another little break; sit back and enjoy the moment, because the second third will start with a little more power than the first third. The typical Corojo flavor picks up. The earthy aroma pushes into the foreground, combined with delicate hints of leather. Right now, in the main act, this cigar is reminiscent of the glory days of Cuban cigars from the 1990s, which were a bit more powerful than today‘s successors. It is at the end of the second third where a hint of sweet vanilla is revealed, similar to many a Montecristo. And that sweetness increases significantly. It’s amazing how the flavors often swing radically in different directions without disrupting the overall concept. The CLE Corojo Robusto always remains coherent. Draw by draw, this glorious tobacco reveals its full potential.

In the final third, we can expect even more vanilla sweetness and coffee aromas. The initial citrus note has faded and now makes way for a woody final act that knows how to inspire. I hope your burn was as straightforward as mine, and that the ash was just as snowy white. The final puffs bring out some bitterness, but this can never affect the overall picture. Most importantly, the last puffs bring back memories of Cuba’s glory days, and cigars that you can’t get anymore.

The CLE Corojo Robusto is a masterpiece and proof that Christian Eiroa knows his craft. So if you miss the Cuban flavor, you can safely turn your gaze toward Honduras. It’s a place where a family has been cultivating truly fabulous tobacco for generations. And it’s a place where ancient knowledge has been preserved and ultimately brought to a new flowering. Simply wonderful!

Tasting C.L.E. Corojo Robusto

Damit erstmal herzlich willkommen in unserem gemeinsamen Rauchsalon.

Einfach herrlich!
