Cigar Regulations Update: Germany, UK and Spain

Paul Varakas, Director General of the European Cigar Manufacturers Association (ECMA), highlights the latest developments affecting cigar consumers and retailers across Europe.

Across several EU countries and the UK, new regulatory proposals and legislative steps continue to impact the cigar community. Staying informed and engaging with policymakers is more important than ever.

Here are the latest updates and ways you can take action:

Germany

The German government, in search of fresh additional revenues, is proposing to tear down its successful tobacco tax model – the new taxation based on retail price is set to increase by 1,300% !! This will primarily impact premium-priced cigars. Contact your MP and raise your concerns!

United Kingdom

The British Government is consulting on extending plain packaging to cigars. Your voice matters — make it heard in just a few minutes:  https://savecigars.co.uk

Spain

The Spanish Government aims to ban smoking on terraces and private clubs. The Bill is expected to reach Parliament in September, where we hope to see many passionados raise their opposition to these draconian measures.
