At last year’s combined Swedish and Danish qualification round of the Cigar Smoking World Championship more than 50 smokers turned up. When they organized separately this year the Danish one attracted almost as many smokers on its own.
“Denmark might not be the best slow smoking nation, but it is one the biggest events on the circuit,” cigar importer and host Jesper Petersen says. “Nearly 50 people is very good for a small country.”
Defending champion Michael Iversen was once again in the race, but in the end he had to concede to Nick Shawney. It was close, though. With only 27 seconds difference Shawney claimed the title of Danish champion for the second time, and next year Petersen predicts there will be even more competitors in the running.
“The goal is 60-65 people,” he says. “And since there were a lot of new participants you will probably have to smoke for more than 2 hours to win the Danish championship as well.”
