For the 250th birthday, Les Fines Lames wanted to celebrate with an idea that’s been in their mind for years. To them, it’s one of the most mythic (yet overlooked) episodes in American military history: The Flying Tigers Squadron.
The Flying Tigers squad: They went first
A squadron of volunteer American pilots recruited in secret before Pearl Harbor, who were ready to fight before their country had even entered the war. As Japan dominated the Pacific theater with superior numbers and battle-hardened forces, they were outnumbered in nearly every engagement, outgunned on paper. It didn’t matter. Precise, relentless, legendary, they destroyed 297 Japanese aircraft for 14 pilots lost.
To add to their legend, they painted a shark mouth across the nose of their P-40 Warhawks. Razor teeth, black eyes, red gums. Pure psychological warfare, imagined by bold men.
Officially dissolved on July 4th, 1942 (84 years ago to the day), the squad was absorbed into the US Army Air Forces as the 23rd Fighter Group. But legends never dissolve.
