The new Davidoff Art Initiative is tirelessly pursuing its mission: Cuban artist Quisqueya Henríquez has been assigned to design the first artist edition; her works will be displayed for the first time this May, during Art Basel Hong Kong.
The Davidoff Art Residency’s third recipient is Dominican artist Pascal Meccariello. He’ll be in residence this May and June at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. Meccariello has mastered a comprehensive repertoire of media; his rich formal language includes installations, drawings, video art, ceramics, graphics, photography, and performance art.
“With this invitation, Davidoff is making an important contribution to my personal career. At the same time, I also see an opportunity for the Dominican Republic’s contemporary artists to link into an international network.” Pascal Meccariello has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently at the Venice Biennale; his pieces are featured in a number of important collections. His work explores how individuals deal with illusions and abstract concepts like freedom, love, doubt, and justice.
In addition, Davidoff is also awarding two art grants: one to ARC magazine, based in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and another to the Centro de la Imagen in Santo Domingo (DR). Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard, CEO of the Oettinger Davidoff Group, said, “Davidoff is playing a role in the further development of these organizations, as well supporting the Dominican Republic’s cultural community on a broader level. This is the Davidoff Art Initiative’s main goal.”
