Distinctive Pelo de Oro tobacco [Spanish: golden hair] was once popular in Cuba, but because of its susceptibility to blue mold disease and its low yields, it is hardly grown anymore. These days, it is primarily cultivated (with a lot of care and attention from farmers) in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Peru. Collaborating with farmer A.J. Fernandez allowed Rafael Nodal access to Fernandez’ coveted Pelo de Oro harvest. Their cigar is rolled at Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua in Estelí in the traditional Cuban style, with a triple cap and pigtail head. It is available in boxes of ten at USD $125.99.
Tasting notes: This complex, well-balanced blend develops a sweetish, zesty taste in the creamy smoke. Nutty, coffee and earthy aromas combine with vegetal, fruity notes and some pepper. Medium-bodied.
