A shared passion, fresh perspectives and personal connections defined the inaugural Cigar Culture Summit Africa in Johannesburg. Held last weekend (23 to 25 October), the event brought together passionados, sommeliers, retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers in an emerging market. More than 100 participants from 14 countries took the opportunity to share knowledge and success stories, forge new connections and strengthen existing relationships.

The event highlighted what makes dialogue within the cigar industry so valuable: a willingness to share experience, learn from one another and engage in conversations beyond individual business interests. Passionados and sommeliers met retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers, who openly shared their expertise and took time to answer participants’ questions. Across a range of formats and settings, the Cigar Culture Summit Africa program offered opportunities for discussion, networking and memorable shared experiences. A common enthusiasm for cigar culture connected people across national borders and professional backgrounds.

Johannesburg proved a compelling location for this international gathering. The summit gave South Africa’s emerging cigar community a platform for direct dialogue with industry players from around the world. International guests, in turn, were able to build local connections and gain fresh insights into South African cigar culture. The event thus opened up new perspectives for exchange and collaboration on both sides.

From its very first edition, the summit’s appeal extended well beyond the host country. Alongside South Africa, other African countries represented included Angola, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Guests also travelled from China, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic and the United States, among other countries.

The inaugural event was honored by the presence of Erika Álvarez Rodríguez, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to South Africa. She opened the summit, setting the tone for a weekend of meaningful encounters.

With its first edition in Johannesburg, the Cigar Culture Summit Africa has forged a new link between the African and international cigar communities. Next year’s edition, provisionally scheduled for October, will build on the open dialogue and positive response to the inaugural event. Planning is already underway.

All information and updates are available on the Cigar Culture Summit Africa website.

Cigar Culture Summit Africa sponsors share their impressions:

Paul Kruyswijk, Premium Cigar Ambassador at Clippa Sale:
“The Cigar Culture Summit Africa brought the cigar communities of Africa and Europe together and showed that Cigars speak a universal language. The professional organization and personal exchanges made this inaugural event special for us – we look forward to the next edition.”

Leonor Abzaradel, CEO of Platinum Nova Cigars:
“The Cigar Culture Summit is more than just an event. It’s a special opportunity to bring people together, share our love for cigars, and celebrate the traditions behind cigar culture. Platinum Nova Cigar is very happy and proud to be part of this amazing experience, meet new people, share our passion, and create beautiful memories together.”

Gennaro Lettieri, owner of Tabacalera del Oriente:
“A compact, intensive summit can be just the right way to share the passion and enthusiasm for the art of slow smoke with fully handcrafted cigars. Meeting cigar enthusiasts, distributors, manufacturers and the organizing team was particularly valuable. For me, it was an opportunity to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the work in my factory. Peru all the way – and Inca is the path!”

George A. Rico, President of Gran Habano Cigars:
“The Cigar Culture Summit Africa was an incredible experience and an important step forward for the premium cigar community in this part of the world. I was impressed by the passion, knowledge, and genuine interest in cigar culture. It was an honor to share our experience as manufacturers and to be part of a conversation that celebrates the craftsmanship, tradition, and future of premium cigars. I truly believe South Africa has tremendous potential to become an important part of the global cigar community.”
