Government regulations have made public cigar lounges a rarity in Canada. While a handful of exceptions remain, these establishments are few and far between, making them particularly valuable to passionados seeking a place to comfortably enjoy a fine cigar and good company is within a public space.

One such outlier is Q Cigar Room, located in Enoch, Alberta, on Cree First Nations treaty land just outside Edmonton. Its unique treaty land location has allowed the establishment to offer something that has all but disappeared elsewhere in the country: a public space where patrons can enjoy a fine cigar alongside dinner and a drink, regardless of the weather.

Owners Tanis Gardiner and her husband, Quentin (he’s the “Q” behind the name) have created a welcoming destination for local cigar enthusiasts and visiting smokers alike. In a city where winter temperatures can plunge below -30 C, providing a comfortable place to enjoy a cigar is no small feat.

“The colder it gets, the busier we get,” says Tanis.

It is easy to understand why. One of Q Cigar Room’s biggest draws is its spacious, fully enclosed patio, where fireside seating creates an inviting atmosphere without exposing patrons to Alberta’s unforgiving winter weather. The setting offers the vibe of an outdoor cigar lounge while keeping blustery wind and cold firmly at bay.

Inside, a meticulously curated humidor caters to boutique-brand-loving cigar smokers, while a thoughtfully developed cocktail program provides an equally compelling reason to stay awhile. One standout is the Smoked Old Fashioned, served beneath a glass cloche that releases a cloud of smoke when lifted. The cocktail is infused with pipe tobacco sourced from Burlington on Whyte, a nearby Edmonton tobacconist, adding an aromatic flourish to a familiar cocktail classic.

For a mere $3, any cocktail on the menu can receive the smoked treatment.

In a country where opportunities to enjoy a cigar in a public setting have become increasingly scarce, the lounge offers a welcome reminder of what these public spaces can provide.

And when the Alberta winter settles in, there may be no better place than to appreciate it than beside a warm fire, cocktail in hand and a fine cigar at ‘The Q’.

Done, and thank you.
