THE CHEDI Andermatt Cigar Library | Cigarfriendly: Andermatt, CH

The Chedi Hotel in Andermatt – a jewel in the Swiss Alps that embodies local tradition, Asian grace and elegance – opened a very exquisite cigar lounge – the “Cigar Library”.

Under the expert guidance of 26-year-old bar manager and cigar lover Marie Gerber, the hotel has built up the largest selection of cigars in the Swiss hotel industry.

This unique location stands for cosiness, friendliness, gourmet cuisine, alpine chic, Asian expression & harmony, but the abundance of possibilities offered for cigar lovers in this unique hotel is impressive.

The small, but very fine indoor cigar lounge with following walk-in humidor offers an exquisite selection of cigar literature and has seating for approx. 12 people. If, on the other hand, you want to combine cigar smoke with a breeze of mountain air, The Courtyard offers a chilly atmosphere.

The hotel’s “sanctuary” is the walk-in glass humidor. Here you will find rarities and special editions that are hard to find, such as the extremely rare Gurkha HMR His Majesty’s Reserve, the prestigious Cohiba Behike 56, but also trendy smouldering stalks like the “Dirty Hooligan” from Alec Bradley.

A good third of the collection comes from Cuba, another from the Dominican Republic. In total, aficionadas and aficionados can choose from cigars from eight countries, including Brazil, Panama, Nicaragua and Honduras. Everything is also represented in terms of quality and production: from the simple, box-pressed entry-level model to the hand-rolled high-end version.

Mistress of the humidor is Marie Gerber – one of the best barkeepers in Switzerland and a passionate cigar smoker. It was pure curiosity that gave her her taste. “The fascination drove me into the cigar metier. I really wanted to know what it felt like and what it tasted like. Today it is pure love that I discover again and again. And I’ve learned that it’s not only men with big wallets who have a penchant for cigars. I want to pass this on and arouse enthusiasm for this product beyond the stereotypical clientele,” says Gerber.

To this end, she recently launched “The Chedi Cigar Circle by Marie Gerber”, where guests are introduced to the subtle world of cigars at regular events. True to the Swiss sense of discretion, the motto of The Chedi Cigar Circle is: What happens in Andermatt stays in Andermatt. There will be laughter, celebration and smoking in a cool and carefree atmosphere. Guests can share their cigar experience online under the Hashtag #chedicc.

At her #Cigarcircle number 3 Marie Gerber also got a whole collection of the Cigar Journal Editions, with some of the last available copies (see photo below). This unique collection can now be decorated on site.

About The Chedi Andermatt

Surrounded by the wonderful nature and year-round beauty of the Swiss Alps, The Chedi Andermatt fits elegantly into the classic ski chalets of Andermatt, which characterise the image of this timelessly charming village in the Ursern valley. Designed by renowned architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects, the 5-star deluxe hotel opened in 2013 perfectly combines the authentic alpine chic of Switzerland with Asian style. Traditional materials such as warm woods and natural stone create an intimate and stylish atmosphere. This is reflected in the 123 spacious guest rooms and suites as well as in the hotel’s extensive facilities. These include The Restaurant, The Japanese Restaurant, The Chalet (only open in the winter months), The Bar and Living Room, The Lobby, The Courtyard, The Wine and Cigar Library and the 2,400 square metre The Spa and Health Club. The well-known hotel and gastronomy guide GaultMillau named The Chedi Andermatt Hotel of the Year 2017 and the 5-star deluxe hotel was voted Switzerland’s best holiday hotel 2018/19 in the renowned hotel rating of Karl Wild. The Japanese Restaurant has also been awarded a Michelin star since 2017. Further information: www.thechediandermatt.com
