Leaf Cigar Emporium Opens Second New Jersey Location

At a time when more and more purchases happen with a click, a swipe, and a delivery notification, one New Jersey retailer is betting on something decidedly old-fashioned: face-to-face conversation.

Leaf Cigar Emporium, is opening its second location in Old Bridge on Monday, August 24th—not simply as another cigar shop, but as a place designed to bring people together. For founder John Garofalo, that’s the entire point.

“The biggest competition today isn’t another cigar shop,” Garofalo said. “It’s online shopping. If all you’re offering is a product on a shelf, people can order it from their phone and have it delivered tomorrow. What they can’t order online is genuine hospitality, trusted advice, real conversation, and a place where people know their name.”

Rather than simply replicating its successful Shrewsbury location, the Old Bridge store introduces a different retail experience centered around an expansive, nearly 900-square-foot, fully humidified showroom.

More than a traditional walk-in humidor, the showroom combines premium cigars, accessories, and customer service into one environment, designed to surprise visitors from the moment they step inside.

“We wanted people to walk in and immediately feel like this wasn’t just another cigar shop,” Garofalo said. “We wanted them to have that ‘wow’ moment.”

While the showroom may capture customers’ attention, Garofalo believes the atmosphere will keep them coming back. “We’re really in the hospitality business,” he said. “Premium cigars are simply the medium.”

“We’re obsessed with the customer experience,” Garofalo said. “Whether someone has been smoking premium cigars for thirty years or is buying one as a gift for the first time, we want them to leave feeling like they were genuinely taken care of.”

“We’ve learned that exceptional experiences become your best marketing,” he said. “People remember how you made them feel, and they tell other people.

Garofalo envisions Leaf as something increasingly rare in modern life: a welcoming gathering place that’s neither home nor work, but somewhere people genuinely enjoy spending time. Sociologists often refer to these spaces as “third places”—informal environments where friendships develop, conversations flourish, and communities quietly strengthen.

“We want to be part of the neighborhood,” Garofalo said. “Some people stop in for a few minutes to pick up cigars. Others spend an hour catching up with friends or unwinding after work. We have customers who work from our lounge, customers celebrating milestones, and customers who simply want a place to slow down for a while. That’s exactly what we hoped Leaf would become.”
