Following the release of the Davidoff “Year of the Ox” cigars and its accessories in November, Davidoff Cigars continues celebrating the Chinese New Year with its “Year of the Ox” Masterpiece humidor and the Masterpiece pipe.
“Davidoff’s limited editions celebrating the Chinese Zodiac have become sought after collectors’ items by Chinese as much as global aficionados. Every year our passionate teams get deeply inspired by the respective zodiac and bring it to life in each facet of our highly exclusive creations. This year’s sign, the ox, is reflected in a full-bodied cigar and two spectacular Masterpieces that complement our cigar offering: a Masterpiece humidor and a Masterpiece pipe both reflecting the power and resilience of its inspiration the ox, and made entirely by hand by true artists of their craft.”, says Edward Simon, Chief Marketing Officer of Oettinger Davidoff AG.
The “Year of the Ox” Masterpiece Pipe – limited to five exclusive pipes worldwide
For the “Year of the Ox” limited edition, Davidoff pairs Italian craftsmanship and Japanese ancestral decoration techniques to create an unprecedented pipe offering. This pipe is crafted out of Italian briar wood and adorned with a solid “Year of the Ox” gold ring that emphasizes the contrast between the black mouthpiece and the wood grain of the pipe body.
Decorated in Japan by the Zohiko atelier, the ox is made of two different Maki-e techniques*: the horns and the hooves of the ox are created with the Nashiji technique that makes them shine with irregular reflections, whereas the body of the ox is made using the Hiramakié technique that allows very thin designs.
The “Year of the Ox” Masterpiece humidor – limited to seven humidors worldwide
The humidor “Year of the Ox” is adorned with a subtle engraved pattern and features a gold plated handle, to allow opening and closing the humidor comfortably. The shape of two ox horns are the main design feature of this Masterpiece, carefully crafted out of ox leather and inlaid by hand into the lid of the humidor. Contrasting the red lacquer, the golden coloured leather harmonizes with the handle while its sturdy structure is representing the strength and the determination of the Ox. Once opened the humidor unveils a gold-plated ox icon. The ox is standing, ploughing his own furrow never diverted from his course. Another hidden highlight of this Masterpiece is a drawer lined with leather accommodating a Davidoff jet flame lighter and a Davidoff double blade cutter engraved with the “Year of the Ox” pattern. All the gold parts of the humidor are plated with gold 5 micro. The humidor contains 88 cigars that rest on the cigar tray engraved with the ox symbol. The number 88 symbolizes fortune and good luck in Chinese culture, as the number 8 sounds similar to the word wealth in Mandarin and Cantonese and is considered the luckiest number in the Chinese culture. The shape of the Chinese character for 8, which starts narrow and gets wide towards the bottom, implies that a person will have a great and wide future. The “Year of the Ox“-humidor has been created for Davidoff by the luxury craft company Moevus in Virieu le Grand (France). The company possesses rare and unique know-how in the mastery of woodworking, marquetry and varnishing and is one of the prestigious labels of “Entreprises du patrimoine vivant” as well as “Atelier d’art de France”.
